OVERVIEW

Music plays an important role in our daily activities, and by allowing the dominant language exclusivity in a such diverse country like Canada is ludicrous. It is boring and I want my project/initiative to start a discussion regarding this imbalance. I want my project to allow immigrants/foreigners to have their favorite songs played in an unexpected environment (whether it is shopping, visiting galleries or museums). Music from other cultures will play on overhead speakers or the PSA system just as background music is often heard in retail environments. The first step is for this project is to have foreign voices in a gallery space where music is not often heard as a way to decolonize the space. The idea will then be proposed to the corporate places like Walmart, No-frills, Starbucks …. and hopefully this can create a change in the system. I hope that some audience members might recognize the tunes or find a certain nostalgia in the music, while others or strangers to this music could discover something else in this music, I especially desire this to occur in a multicultural country such as Canada.
